Mickey Mouse Cake

This is a 3-tier cake, design was based on another cake found on www.cakecentral.com.  The bottom tier is 8-inches, middle tier is 6-inches and the top tier (the ears) is approximately 4-inches.  The cake is frosted in buttercream icing with mmf decorations.  To read more, please click below.

I normally make the mouse ears using half of a sports ball pan, but since the middle tier is only 6-inches round, the head needed to be smaller, so I baked two 4" rounds, leveled and stacked them and carved them into the dome shape for the head portion of the ears. I frosted it in buttercream and covered the dome in true black mmf (recipe is at the bottom of the front page of my blog)..  The ears themselves are made from true black marshmallow (2 circles sandwiched together for each ear).  I always make a wire circle to go between the layers of the ears to give them stability (you can see the wire at the outer edges of the ears.  I leave a portion of the wire (about 5 inches) going straight down so the ears will stay in place in the cake.  I place the wire into a drink-stirring straw before sticking it in the cake (to keep the wire from actually touching the cake).  The feet are molded from rice krispy treats and frosted with buttercream (to smooth out the lumps and bumps) and then covered with yellow marshmallow fondant.  I also hot-glued red ribbon around the edge of the cake board to add another splash of color.
