Perry the Platypus

This is the second time I have made this cake :)  It is made from a single 9x13 inch sheet cake, cut in half and stacked. He is frosted in teal buttercream with marshmallow fondant eyes, tail, back feet, hair and beak.  The eyes were placed on the front of his face, rather than on top of his head as last time I made this cake.  This was a little tricky b/c the mmf balls I made the eyes of is heavy, so I had to support them on dowels that were secured in the cardboard base.  The sharpened dowels were inserted at an angle (about 45 degrees) and hammered into the base.  There was just enough dowel showing on the front of the cake on which to place the eyes.  I am much happier with this look :).

  2. Thanks for your comment! You can do it! I worried about the eyes, too... but I was determined to put them on the front of his body this time and this worked out well :) Good luck!

  5. I mix red and green cake colors together to get a darker richer brown... I have been let down by brown icing color in the past (it has a pink tint to it). Try the brown and red in a small bit of the fondant you've made and see how that works for you. It can sometimes take a lot of coloring and a bit of time to get the ratio of green:red coloring to achieve the right shade of brown. Another option is to use chocolate fondant. I would try the True Black fondant recipe without adding the black food coloring, though, before I would make chocolate fondant with cocoa powder again (I had such an awful time with that recently). GL!!
