Kung Fu Panda Cake

This was so fun to make.  It is a 10 inch square, 8-inch round and half-sports ball pan carved to look like a mountain.  Po is handmade from marshmallow fondant.  For more info and pictures, click below :)

The 10-inch in covered in red fondant with yellow stripes.  The 8-inch round is covered in yellow with bamboo stalks around it.  The half-sports ball was carved to look like rock and covered in gray/black/brown marbled fondant with fondant rocks around it and on it.  I placed a few of these rocks randomly on the 10 inch square to continue that them on the cake.  Kung fu Panda, Po, was handmade from marshmallow fondant.  His belly is a ball of foil covered in white fondant onto which everything else was placed.  There is a dowel that goes through his bottom foot all the way into his belly (almost all the way to the top near his belt) to hold him steady on the cake. Without that foil center, I am sure the weight of his head and arms would have pulled the dowel through him and he would have fallen off or apart.  He took a really long time to make, and I am very proud of him! :)  The scroll is white fondant with green fondant at the top and bottom.  "Caleb 6" is written on with a black food marker. I did use red fondant on this cake... I have complained about it many times in the past.  I made my regular fondant and added 1/2 ounce of red (Cars red, to be exact b/c that is all I had at the time).  I mixed it the color in and kneaded the fondant as usual and the texture is just not the same as regular fondant.  I had to microwave it to soften it before rolling it out.  It is stickier that other colors and tears much more easily... but it worked out... it just took more effort to use it.
