This cake was made from a single 11"x15" sheet cake, cut in half lengthwise and stacked, then carved. It is frosted in buttercream icing and covered and decorated in marshmallow fondant. It is raised slightly to appear that the truck is sitting on its tires. The headlights are working lights! They are "Celebration Lights" I found in the wedding section of Michael's craft store. I can't wait to use them in another cake! To view more pictures and a link detailing how to make a car (or truck) cake such as this, click "read more".
The trick to making a car or truck cake look like it is sitting on its tires is to place the cake on a custom-cut board that is exactly the same size as the cake, with wheel wells cut out (so there will be a place to put the tires). Then adhere this board to risers (a stack of cake boards cut to fit between the tires works well), I cover the risers with fanci foil, just like the board... so they blend in (or use black so they won't stand out at all), and adhere the risers to the bottom cake board for carrying. I use hot glue to adhere all the pieces together. I am lucky that my husband is handy with woodworking tools... he cut the custom cake board and bottom board out of mdf board for me. It is a thin (approximately 1/4 inch) but sturdy wood product. I highly recommend it, particularly for sitting the cake on b/c fondant covered cakes can be very heavy and you wouldn't want the board to fold and cause your cake to collapse! I always cover the mdf board with foil or fanci foil before placing the cake on it.
